The Positioning of Buddhist Undergraduates in developing the Malaysian Buddhism

To ponder on the positioning of Buddhist Undergraduates, we have to at first recognize the Buddhist Undergraduates as a community. The very basic task a Buddhist must do is to cultivate wisdom and eliminate worries. So do the Buddhist undergraduates, therefore we shall put aside this.

The Malaysian Buddhist undergraduates owned the resources that the world admired and a complete organization i.e. IYBCC, but it was the effort of the seniors. How far can we go after 30, 40 years? To build a society with wisdom, compassion & gratitude has been the mission of the Buddhist undergraduates. The main task now is to establish a mechanism to develop the undergraduates. Thus the support of YBAM is important.

The importance of Buddhist undergraduates’ movement depends on the sincere communication and co-operation during the student years in order to foster better mutual understanding. Such understanding will nurture a strong team-work sprint and collaboration towards accomplishing the vision. The movement of Buddhist undergraduates has prepared a pool of future leaders and youth to contribute to the Buddhist community when they graduated.

The National Undergraduate Community Service Program is one distinctive feature of integration of the undergraduates with the society. In fact it is the success story of Buddhist education at individual level: the Buddhist education at adolescent level, effort by Buddhist societies, the acceptance of the society towards Buddhism and the strong foundation in the Buddhist undergraduate movement. However, this has not been effectively capitalized, the source of young leadership still come from very few organizations. There are various feedbacks on the establishment and survival of Buddhist societies in the secondary schools and varsities in recently years. To overcome the problems and to continuously protect the rights of Buddhist, we must be fully aware of the constitution of the country and the government policy, as well as to actively participate in the process. We should strive to establish a formal channel to convey our messages to the government. Direct participation in nation building is one important factor we must consider.

The Buddhist undergraduates must be ambitious and visionary, one could hardly move forward without aim and expectations, what more of building the nation or to protect the Dharma? To encourage more youth to learn the Dharma, the undergraduates must first develop themselves.

Camps, retreat activities and Dharma classes are very good self development tools for the undergraduates. The operation of IYBCC and the Buddhist Undergraduates Development workshop further compliment any shortcomings that may arise. IYBCC is the main player of Buddhist undergraduate movement, and the Buddhist Undergraduates Development workshop is the heart of Buddhist undergraduate movement. There is an urgency to conduct studies and discussions among the undergraduates to collect information accurately and to gain knowledge from others’ experiences. It is through research that we know how many Buddhist societies had been established since the 80s, how many Buddhist societies had been dismissed in the secondary school, how we can maintain Dharma classes etc. We should at least study the Universities and University Colleges Act to understand the rationale between what can be done and what can’t. If the development workshop is operating and effective, it will help the IYBCC to grow more vigorously.

Bear in mind that the organization is merely our tools, strategic planning is the route to achieve our mission. Let us put ourselves down, take up the challenge! A piece of awareness or a moment of involvement could drive the way to improvement.

Strive on, Buddhist undergraduates! Looking forward to work with you again!
